Background

Background

Haikal was established in the year 2001 in response to the 11-year brutal civil war that caused massive destruction, and extremely devastated Sierra Leone’s economy, education and its struggling health systems. Rebuilding the nation’s fractured systems was and remains to be the focus of the organization.

The organization’s key focus is bringing hope to the hopeless and is working relentlessly in reaching the hard-to-reach rural communities as well as risks-prone urban settings.

Haikal is registered as a National NGO with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED); the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO); the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs (MSWGCA); the Ministry of Health & Sanitation (MoHS); and the Ministry of Education Science &Technology (MEST).

Haikal began its programmatic journey by establishing a nursery school in Bo, for the displaced children and orphans, that later grew to be the Haikal Academy. Haikal has its administrative office in Freetown and its operational offices in Bo and Magburaka.
